Good Problems

Right now my biggest dilemma in life is just about whether or not I should upgrade to the Digitone 2 from the original (which is a great problem to have).

I got the Digitone in 2020 and it was my first groovebox (and first FM synth) that wound up starting a domino effect of buying more synths. I didn't get it at first, but after forcing myself to learn the workflow I realized the Elektron synths are some of the most genius machines out there.

Stumble Until it Works

I had no idea what I was about to sit down and make, but I started something on the Digitone that was just a bass, snare, hat, and kick.

This only took about 10 minutes or so including the sound design. Once you know your way around FM synthesis it gets easy to transform a sine wave into a bunch of different things.

That wound up turning into this after I got it into Bitwig:

There's obviously a little more in Bitwig since I'm not limited to just four tracks. I kinda wonder though, would upgrading to the Digitone 2 with 16 tracks improve or worsen my workflow? It'd probably increase the time I'm spending on songs but I can get more done pre-DAW. Maybe it's that semi-permanence/innate limitation that prevents so many changes in Bitwig, and also causes me to think on the fly and be intentional before I call a loop done.
