I accidentally have a mobile setup now

Koala Sampler + MIDI Fighter

Rediscovering Utility

I downloaded Koala Sampler back in 2019 or 2020, but because I mainly use synths I found myself whistling or recording the same impacts to objects in order to get my samples. This got so boring so fast, so I deleted the app after a couple years.

I revisited it over the weekend though:

I didn't realize though that they'd released an update that incorporates a mixer, so I figured I'd buy the update and give it a go. Only after that did I see that it has a synth engine now, so naturally I got carried away:

I was pretty surprised here that I could get decent-sounding drums out of the synth engine without any layering.

Surprised again when I could get what sounded like a proper sine compression bass fairly easily.

You can probably tell that this one is where I remembered I could plug my MIDI Fighter into my phone.

Workflows and whatnot

My plan is to just make some sketches on my phone, then fire up Bitwig or my SP404 MKII to get a more fleshed out version going.

It's easier to just make patches on a limited synth engine because it's limited. I only have a few parameters to work with on Koala's Quokka engine, but I've spent hours on one patch on my Hydrasynth. This way I'm not heading in the wrong direction for way too long before giving up on the idea and starting a new project -- I'm pretty much forced to work quickly.

Time to go make more stuff.
