Don't Forget to Make Stuff
This was originally a long post about how I figured out how to enter a flow state on command after being distracted for too many sessions.
One version sounded too long-winded, another was thankfully accidentally deleted, but this is sort of the Goldilocks version.
Don't Forget to Make Stuff
Long story short, I wasn't paying attention to the things that pushed me out of a flow state and kept having sessions that didn't feel productive. Part of this was from using a new DAW (<3 Renoise), the other part was just from being distracted.
It actually started to annoy me a bit when I noticed I could really lock in and knock out difficult non-creative tasks, but creativity didn't seem to function the same way.
Pay attention to what throws you off, make note of it for next time, and keep working. The exact same practice happens for meditation: just notate your distracting thoughts and come back to them when you're done.
Don't Forget to Make Stuff
Because I think everyone could use the reminder every now and then.
I got so caught up in the methodology for a while that I wasn't focusing on actually just making things. It felt for a bit like there was some sort of responsibility I had that I wasn't taking care of, but I couldn't figure out what it was even though it was staring me in the face.
Sort of an artistic withdrawal.
That said though, having a notepad helped. The act of physically writing observations down instead of typing them made me process my thoughts much better. I still write lyrics this way sometimes when I really need to map out concepts. Screens don't always do it justice.
Don't Forget to Make Stuff
In particular, don't forget to just be a creative person and have fun.
Off to go make stuff.
